Google Gears up to Add Digital Watermark to Images Edited With Generative AI

Android maker Google just shared that starting this week, it’s adding digital watermarks to all pictures on Google Photos that were edited with Generative AI.

The latest watermark applies particularly to pictures edited through its Reimagine feature seen inside Pixel 9’s Magic Editor. As shared in 2024, Reimagine makes use of generative AI to make edits to certain parts of an image. Similar to other settings on the editor, it’s capable of retouching pictures shot on the phone. This gives rise to a lot more serious level of editing through AI that produces dramatic changes. It almost blurs the line between digital images and those generated through AI completely.

Generative AI pictures keep appearing more lifelike in design. Digital advocates are calling for a universal technique to assist the public in distinguishing real from fake. Therefore, that’s where the idea for digital watermarking arose as the best end solution. It can be included in any file without altering the picture itself.

The Android maker hopes to use SynthID to mark any relevant pictures. The feature is by Google’s DeepMind which says the use of digital watermarks inside AI content is quintessential. It can embed the watermark with ease into AI content and no compromise is done to the actual content. Similarly, it can scan pictures for additional watermarks. It’s still in beta but we know that it can even work well with text made using AI as well as any video.

Users simply need to press About this Image to locate the digital watermarks inside the image’s metadata. Google shared how certain edits might not trigger the likes of SynthID. Therefore, they were too small to get noticed and labeled. A great example is edits to the color of a flower inside the background of the picture.

We can see where Google is going with this. The addition happens to be a part of the company’s bigger efforts to ensure AI edits are more noticeable inside Google Photos. Remember, the organization cites all published AI principles as it feels it’s a guide to making such decisions.

So the next time you see the digital watermark, you’ll be able to differentiate edits done through AI easily.
