Deepfake Evolution: ByteDance's OmniHuman-1 Redefines AI-Generated Video Manipulation

Researchers from ByteDance have released a new demo of an AI system called OmniHuman-1.

This is designed to roll out some of the most real-looking deepfake videos. Moreover, it would not be wrong to state that deepfake AI has become more of a commodity than anything else. There are no limits on the number of platforms that can insert people into pictures or make them say something that they never did.

However, most video deepfakes do end up leaving trails behind that a little AI was used somewhere to make the edit. But with Omni-Human-1, that’s not the case. At least from what was seen in the examples shared by ByteDance recently.

As per the research experts, this software only requires one reference picture or audio. This could be vocals or speech to produce clips of a certain length. The end product’s aspect ratio gets adjusted and is directly related to the body proportion. For instance, how much of the body is displayed in the fake video.

It’s produced through training on nearly 19,000 video hours through undisclosed sources. Moreover, we see how it can edit any videos existing on the system and edit the movements of people’s hands and legs. Shockingly, the results are picture-perfect.

We agree that it’s far from perfect but from what is seen by ByteDance, poor quality images just won’t do the trick. Instead, you need top-notch images for references to get great videos. If you do add a poor-quality reference, you’ll notice immediately how the system struggles to get the best end result.

It’s still heading the pack in terms of deepfake techniques used in the past. The company is yet to talk about the release but reverse engineering will soon reveal everything we need to know and the implications can be very worrying.

In the past year, we saw so many political deepfakes spread so fast around the globe. On the day of the elections, one Chinese party-affiliated group shared AI-generated audio that was so misleading. A politician was wrongly made to show like they were showing support for a pro-China member. The list is countless as another video showed rapper Eminem providing his support for an opposition party in South Africa, right before the country’s elections. Did we mention how AI deepfakes are used for financial crimes? The matter is worrisome indeed.
