ChatGPT Is Unstoppable: Popular AI Tool Continues To Thrive Despite Archrival Competition from DeepSeek

The recent past saw the arrival of Chinese startup DeepSeek rollout an AI model that caused a stir in the world of tech. It was said to supersede ChatGPT, thanks to its minimal costs and brilliant features.

While it did go head to head with OpenAI, ChatGPT still managed to reign supreme. DeepSeek went all out with the consumer app that’s free of cost and for the price point, the features on offer were simply exceptional. This was when many thought OpenAI had finally met its real match. Sadly, that was not the case.

Between matters like server instability and a huge list of controversies taking center, we got to see DeepSeek take complete control of the industry for a short while only. The hype faded so quickly and the rollout of the o3-mini combined with the ChatGPT $200 tier drove the platform’s revenue to a bigger higher than what we’ve witnessed in the past.

If you’ve been a fan of App Intelligence, you would be familiar with the AI industry report published that showed how the app’s revenue continued to grow at a quick pace since the launch of 4o in 2024.

As per App Intelligence, the net revenue for the company grew a staggering 22% in January to hit the $67 million mark. This is what they keep after subtracting the shares of Google and Apple.

We saw DeepSeek launch in the middle of January which many feel might not be able to see any major upward trend this month. As per estimates from Appfigures, ChatGPT hit its biggest record high for revenue in the middle of last month. It also broke that very same record to a new high last week.

The first two weeks of the year saw ChatGPT make it big in terms of revenue, which could be a direct result of the company’s Pro tier which is 10 times as costly as the standard tier. This saw a new revenue high of $2.95M as of January 17th.

It would not be wrong to mention that nearly every single day during the first two weeks of last month saw a record-breaking figure for the company. But it was not the same for DeepSeek. The second part of January was not as high as anticipated but still much higher than the average for December.

Between issues of subscription renewals and new subscribers, not to mention the launch of o3-mini, we saw ChatGPT go back to another record-breaking performance this month. Last Friday was another major high for the tech giant, hitting a new high of $2.6 million.

As far as the world of apps goes, it appears that the race linked to AI is just beginning with plenty more surprises to come as the year unfolds.
