The Energy Crunch: AI Data Centers and the Battle for Power

AI model training, in particular, is highly energy-intensive, requiring large amounts of power from graphic processing units (GPUs). AI servers with many GPUs may require up to 2 kilowatts of power, as opposed to 300 to 500 watts for a standard cloud server. This growth in energy demand presents data center operators with new hurdles.

To overcome these issues, businesses like DigitalBridge are investing billions of dollars in constructing and renovating data centers mainly intended for generative AI workloads. Smaller data centers are intentionally located in suburban locations, away from big markets, to connect to existing electrical networks without overburdening them. These sites provide higher power density, quicker connectivity, and reduced expenses.

The following data center will be more comprehensive than established hubs like Virginia or Santa Clara. It will instead emerge in low-cost places where electricity supply is not a constraint. To satisfy the expectations of AI growth, data center operators must adapt and adopt novel solutions.
