A US TikTok Ban Would Be Harmful for Creators Around the World

The potential ban on TikTok by the US government might seem like an issue that exclusively matters to Americans, but in spite of the fact that this is the case, creators around the world are paying close attention to it. If TikTok were to get banned in the US, all creators regardless of where they are from would suffer.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this has a lot do with advertising dollars. US based TikTok users are the biggest money makers for creators, which is why dozens of creators took to the steps of the Capitol building to protest the ban.

Major creators like Gilmer Croes who hails from Aruba stated that 40% of his estimated 35 million followers are from the US with all things having been considered and taken into account. Hence, a TikTok ban would be a significant blow to his career because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up cutting him off from his fanbase.

One of the most significant reasons why this ban would make creators earn less than might have been the case otherwise has to do with brand deals. American brands don’t care where a creator is from as long as they can cater to US based audiences. If those audiences were to disappear, smaller creators may be left without a source of income.

Some users might be able to adapt by branching out into other platforms, but content creation works differently on TikTok. TikTok’s algorithm prioritizes things that YouTube might not, which might make a shift to a different platform too challenging to manage.

With over 150 million TikTok users hailing from the US who happen to be extraordinarily valuable, the ripple effects of a ban could be far reaching. Unfortunately, a ban is looking more and more likely by the day. It will be interesting to see how TikTok might change if it ends up getting cut off from the audience that so many of its creators depend on.
