37 Percent of Teens Say TikTok is Their Favorite Social Media Platform

Despite external pressures, TikTok has managed to hold onto the most crucial user base of all: US based teenagers. The social media platform has long been the favored app for users under the age of 18 who are living in the US, but in spite of the fact that this is the case, recent data shows that it might be seeing a bit of a decline.

According to a recent study by Piper Sandler, around 37% of US based teenage users stated that TikTok was their favorite social media platform with all things having been considered and taken into account. However, it should be mentioned that this is a one point decline from the third quarter of 2022, when 38% of members of this cohort said the same.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Snapchat and Instagram are the second and third most influential social media apps among teens in the US. 28% of teenagers pointed to Snapchat as their favorite platform, and 23% said that Instagram was the social media app that they used most frequently.

This survey asked questions of over 5,600 teens in the US, and it also revealed which streaming platforms they use most heavily. Netflix was the winner, with 31% citing it as their go to streaming app, but YouTube was close behind with 28%. Coming in at a distant third place is Hulu, with virtually no other streaming app coming close to Netflix’s sheer dominance of its industry.

All in all, the landscape of social media in the US is changing. Teenagers have shifting preferences when it comes to social media platforms, but their loyalty to TikTok seems rather unwavering. Despite all of the controversies, TikTok’s grip over the US teen user base does not look like it will be going away anytime soon.

It will be interesting to see where these users go if and TikTok gets banned. Its popularity alone might be enough to justify a lighter action on the part of the US government in the short term.
