Google Invests $3 Million Into Data Transfer Project

If you have ever tried to switch from an iOS phone to an Android one, chances are that you are well aware of how frustrating this can be. Many users avoid doing so because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up making it impossible or at least extremely time consuming for them to transfer their data from their old service to the new one, and a lack of cross platform functionality is a big cause of that.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that most major tech companies want to make things easier in this regard. Google is no different, and it is collaborating with other major tech companies like Meta and Apple to create easier data transfer mechanisms that the average user can end up taking advantage of. This collaboration is resulting in the Data Transfer Project, or DTP for short, and it has progressed by leaps and bounds after it was first announced in 2018.

Google is taking things to another level by expanding open source offerings and pledging to invest an additional $3 million into the project over the next few years. The goal of this project is to allow users to transfer data without having to place it in an external device first, instead making it so that they can just copy and paste the data instantly with all things having been considered and taken into account.

Google Takeout is a Google oriented service that is trying to allow the average user to utilize Data Transfer Project related features, and it has now allowed users to export over 400 billion files in 2021 alone. That’s more than twice the number of files that were exported with Google Takeout in 2019, and at this rate of growth chances are that switching to a new device or service provider will become so easy that people will start doing it a lot more often. That might work in Google’s favor by increasing the chances that iOS users would be willing to make the switch.
