Making Games More Accessible Could Become a Goldmine According to New Report

Accessibility has become a huge catchphrase in various industries and gaming is no different because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up exposing games to far more viewers than would have otherwise been possible. While developers and industry leaders in the gaming community have frequently committed to boosting accessibility in gaming, doing so in practice can often be a lot more difficult than people would be able to realize.

A UK based study that analyzed how people with disabilities felt about games found that individuals in these groups often felt that playing and buying games was a bit more difficult for them than it would have been for gamers that did not have special needs. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this creates a lot of opportunity for game developers and the like because it gives them the chance to innovate in ways that their competition might not have initially thought of.

The aforementioned study was conducted by Scope, an advocacy group that attempts to bring the needs of people with disabilities to light. It involved a survey of 1,326 people, 812 of whom lived with disabilities. That means that around 514 of the individuals that were polled were not living with any kind of disability at that precise moment.

Two thirds of the respondents felt that technology that could assist them in various tasks including playing games was prohibitively expensive, and that meant that they were often prevented from enjoying games that other people might end up taking for granted with all things having been considered and taken into account.

One reason for why this can be a bit of a gold rush is the fact that disabled gamers have a tendency to spend more money in the game. That includes purchasing rare items as well as taking part in other transactions that can bring a lot of revenue to game developers and the like. That could lead to billions of revenue due to these individuals often having a lot of disposable income. That creates a financial incentive for game developers to start looking into this along with the moral obligation that they are already well aware of and are incorporating into their game design for most if not all future games.
