Choose a niche

If you want to earn money with your blogging, it is important to choose one single niche to focus on. Choose something you have a passion for, it will make adding content easier.

Domain Name

The next step is choosing a domain name. Make sure you include some keywords related to your niche in the domain. This will make it easier to rank in Google search for those keywords.

Blogging Platform

There are many blogging platforms available like blogger and Tumblr, but for the most flexibility and power you should use a self hosted WordPress blog.

There are a lot of settings available in WordPress, but one of the most important are Permalinks. When in WordPress Lock user settings for permalinks and change it to custom with /%postname%/ in the field. Click save.

WP has a plethora of plugins that can help you and your reader's blogging experience. Plugin choice is a personal matter that is based on your preferences and needs, but some of the most helpful are:
  • All in one SEO Pack : Makes sites more Google-friendly.
  • WP Super Cache : Makes site load faster.
  • Google XML sitemap: Get all of your pages indexed by Google
  • Contact Form 7: Easily add contact-forms to your site.
  • Share-This: Allow your visitors to easily share your site on social networks.

In this online world, content makes your blog a king. With this in mind it is important you update your blog regularly. Aim for everyday, but if it isn't possible, 4 times per week is a minimum.

Post titles

When you write your posts, remember not to ignore the titles as it is the door to your kingdom. Try to include some keywords, and make the headline attention grabbing. Write titles that would get you curious enough to click them  if they were on another site.

The first and last thing is, adding quality content. It is the very lifeblood of your blog. Content is why people come to your site, stay on your site and share your articles and posts. Creating content can be a chore but if you vary the types it won't seem as bad. Some common types of content : Videos, List of Resources, Interviews, Guest Posts, Question and Answer, Top ten lists, How-To's, Reviews, Musings, Debates, Quotes, Audio, Guides, Info-graphics.
