Google Says AI Overviews Has Over 2.5 Billion Monthly Active Users as New Website Controls Roll Out

In a blog post published June 3, Google said it is introducing updated guidance, new Search Console insights and a control that allows website owners to manage whether their links and content appear in generative AI Search features.

Google said AI Overviews now has more than 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly users. The company said AI Overviews and AI Mode have been updated with additional inline links, website previews, Preferred Sources and subscription labels aimed at helping users discover websites.

Google also published guidance for website owners covering unique content, page experience and the use of high-quality images and video.

Google said it is testing a Search Console toggle that allows website owners to choose whether their sites can appear in and help ground responses in generative AI Search features. Sites that opt out will not receive traffic or impressions from those features, and the control will not affect rankings outside them.

The announcement comes as AI-generated search features continue to face scrutiny over accuracy and consistency. In a May report, DIW documented cases in which Google's AI Overviews produced different and incorrect responses to a disputed religious query depending on how the question was phrased.

The new tools are being rolled out first to a subset of website owners in the United Kingdom before a broader global expansion.
